I have found that pasting twice seems to do the trick. It appears to be
a focus issue between Aqua and X11 as near as I can tell. I paste quite
often between Aqua apps and OOo on 10.3.9 and 10.4.x.

cmd-c to copy from the rest of OSX and cntrl-v to paste onto open office
-- (or other way around to copy from X11 to OSX)
