Just a guess. Have a look on the bottom of the ruler for little "T" shapes. If there is one near the right margin only or none then your default tabs are set incorrectly: Go to help and do a search on "default tab stop" or just "tab" and look for "setting default tab stops". This is probably set to near the page width.
