As to starting, there are a number of ways that depend on what OS you use and whether or not your OOo is included with the OS or you installed from the downloadable archive from www.openoffice.org. So to give you am more complete answer, if you installed from the downloadable file for any of *NIX releases, then you should ensure that you have also installed the appropriate desktop as well. Doing so will place executable links in the menus for your desktop windowing system for you. If you use Windows, look in your Start > All Programs menu list for shortcuts to the various applications.
