Check under Tools -> Options... -> Load/Save -> General. If "Always create backup copy" is checked, then there may be a backup copy with the version of the file that you want.
You can find the location of your backups through Tools -> Options... -> OpenOffice.org -> Paths. The backup you are looking for should have the same stem name as your file but with the extension .BAK. You can open it from within OOo Writer.
You can also check in the folder indicated for "Temporary Files". You will find a number of files there with meaningless names. Try opening those created around the time you believed that the overwriting occurred. Some of these files may contain at least part of the material you want to recover.
