I scanned a document and used an OCR program to create a Word document that I opened in OpenOffice.org. All of the hyphens (-) are on a gray background. Any idea of why the character is shaded? It is not a normal hyphen because it shows up a empty box in a non word processor.
Hi Dennis,

Looks as if OOo made fields of it, as it does for bulleted lists.
So if you set off field shadings (menu View) the gray background will be gone. And in Format|Autoformat you can set if OOo has to replace hyphens by bullets on opening.
