In addition, in the "Open With" dialogue box is a checkbox to select
always open with this program. You have to check that for it to work.

Microsoft Word Documents (.doc) will open fine in OpenOffice.org.
Microsoft Works Word Processor Documents (.wps) will not. You would need
to save these from Works Word Processor as Rich Text Format or similar
for OpenOffice.org to load them.
