Three options:
1.  If you only need to read the document, then you can use one of the
viewers that are available for openoffice.org files.  I have no experience
with these but it will certainly be a smaller download.  For example:
http://visioo-writer.tuxfamily.org/EN/
2.  Download and install openoffice.org from www.openoffice.org. This is a
large download, but well worth it--a free office suite that many prefer to
Microsoft Office and which reads and writes MS Office files.
3.  Ask the person who sent you the file to save it as an Microsoft Word
file and send it to you like that.
