I created documents in openoffice and am trying to open them with open office. I even downloaded the newest version thinking that was the problem.

What do I need to do? With which program did you create your documents? With OpenOffice.org? Have you installed OOo on your new computer? (I guess, you haven't.) If you have Microsoft Word on your new computer, you can't use Word for editing your old files, because MS Word can't read neither sxw nor odt-files. You need to install OOo on your new computer.
