My OpenOffice Writer documents can't be opened by Microsoft Word users. Is there a way to make MS Word read OpenOffice Writer?
For the moment, you will have to save and send your Writer documents as .doc format files. You can make this the default save format if you always need to do this, but beware that you possibly degrade OOo formatting by not saving in native OOo formats.

Another option to be aware of is exporting as a PDF file. Anyone who has Adobe Acrobat Reader, which is free, or any other PDF reader, will be able to read the file, and there won't be anything "lost in translation" like there may be if you save it as a doc file. The one major drawback is that the PDF file can't be edited without more specialized software. So if they just need to read it (which is what your question specifically asked), a PDF in my opinion is the best way to go.
