I am using version 2.0 of Open Office. I am supposed to be able to save
a Calc spreadsheet as an .xls file. This just does not happen. Instead,
I get error messages, and if anything at all is saved, it is undecipherable.

You need to provide more information.
Which operating system do you use?
Which error messages do you get?
Does this happen for all xls files, or just one?
Do you have problems with your hard disk?
Does it work when you save the file as ods?
