I can only comment on the last 2. OOo doesn't employ the commonly targeted VB or activeX controls that MS Office software does. If that is what your currently using then you currently have a big red bulls eye. It would definitely be reduced if you installed OOo was installed. When OOo opens an infected MS file, the VB/macro's are commented out so that it cannot run.
"patches / updates"?? OOo release cycle is more frequent than most closed source products and the only time I can remember a vulnerability in OOo there was a patch available. Unsure what he's meaning in this case. Get your admin guy to post to the list with specific concerns - I'm sure his fears can be reduced. /paul On 5/22/06, Evan Prinsloo <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:
Hi I am a teacher of IT in a school in London and have suggested to the Nework Administrator that OpenOffice be installed on all machines as an alternative to convensional office software. Also, off course, to expand the pupils' agillity in using various interfaces. My suggestion/request was received with lots of resistance and issues that could possibly disrupt the normal running of the network. Here is a list of issues that was raised (that I obviously don't have enough knowledge of to comment on): 1. The administrator wants an MSI so that central installation is possible. 2. There are fears of viruses that may be particularly targeted at OpenOffice and gain access to system files. 3. There is (apperently) no patches and updates available for when things do go wrong. I need some convincing comments on the above with supporting evidence if possible. It is often a hard task to convince people set in their ways to embrace something new. YOur support will be greatly appreciated. Thanks Evan Disclaimer: This message is intended solely for the use of the individual or organisation to whom it is addressed.
