One thing I would try, get just the JRE, the java instal seperate.

I'm not were I can get the links, but it's on the requirements page on
openoffice.org

If you can install that without problem, then proceed with the
oo2.0.1(without JRE) install.

good luck

Let us know how it goes.

I am attempting to install OpenOffice.org on a Windows XP system, but
setup.exe is consistently crashing on me.

The system runs Windows XP Home Edition, Version 5.1 Service Pack 2. It
has Norton Anti-virus installed. No version of Openoffice has ever been
installed on this machine. It's my kid's computer and has mostly been
used to run things like "JumpStart Preschool", but they're arriving at
an age where word processing would be useful.

I downloaded OOo_2.0.2_Win32Intel_install_wJRE.exe.

When this is executed, it verifies successfully and unpacks the install
folder on the desktop just fine. Then it seems to run setup.exe from
the install folder, and I get a little window saying "Windows Installer
- Preparing to install". After a short time, I get a crash pop-up.
"msiexec.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close" with the
usual options of sending mail to Microsoft. If I request details, I get
this info:

szAppName: msiexec.exe
szAppVer: 3.1.4000.1823
szModName: unknown
szModVer: 0.0.0.0
offset: 00000000

A minute later a second crash box pops up also from msiexec.exe. This
has slightly different info:
