Welcome to the Open Source world. If you go here: http://www.openoffice.org/ and hit the big green box, you will be guided through a set of pages to access and download OpenOffice which can read and write Office format files. I'm guessing you are using some flavour of Windows, so choose the Windows with JRE version. When you install, it may ask you whether you want to make it the default reader for .doc type files (or whatever the actual dialog says).
