As far as I know, the only difference is that OOo requires the formula to 
start with an equals sign. So:

1) Click on the cell in which the formula is required.
2) Type =
3) Click on the cell you want to include in the formula.
4) Type + (or - or * or / etc)
5) Repeat steps 3 and 4.
6) Click the green tick to the left of the formula bar to finish.
