>From personal experience with a similar situation, I must tell you that OOo Base will not help you much in your Access class. The principles of using database management software (DBMS) are universal, and apply well to both Access and Base, but the user interfaces of the two programs and the functions they can both do are quite different. You will note similarities, in that both can do relational databases, views, queries, reports, and forms. However, the macro support languages in the two applications are incompatible. Instructions you will find in your Access textbook will not work with Base. This class and one on Outlook are probably the only ones you will take on Microsoft Office applications where you cannot expect OpenOffice.org to help you. That being said, I did take such a class while preparing for my AS in Computer & Info Systems, and did all my work on the school's computers since I did not have Microsoft Office. At the same time, I took an advanced class in Excel, and used OOo's Calc to do all the homework, except for a couple features not implemented at that time. (They have since been added, I must note :). Therefore, I recommend you install and get used to OpenOffice.org, even try to learn Base at the same time you learn Access. You will find that Base can do most of the important things Access can do, and do them well. Hope you do well in the class and find OOo a worthy tool to use at the same time.
