I have a fairly technical, specialized, question regarding the OpenOffice database program. Hope someone out there can help.

I've got a huge text file containing a large dataset that was originally on a mainframe at Columbia University, back in the Sixties. Fortunately, the data is laid out very clearly and, theoretically, there ought to be a fairly simple way to bring it into a database, such as Base, and work with it. I've tried opening it as a .csv file, which works to the extent that the file does display in Base. However, it's not in a format I can use and I have no idea how to reformat it. And Help isn't much help. Neither is the manual. What makes matters worse is that I've never worked with a database before. I have a good idea how I'd like to see the thing laid out, but no clue as to how to accomplish that.

There's no point in getting into all the details here, but if there's someone out there interested in helping me whip this file into shape I'd really appreciate it. Please respond off list if you're out there. Thanks.

Victor Grauer
