There are many free and good email clients out there, so rather than
re-invent the wheel, OOo has decided to integrate with them.
For example:
Evolution (Linux mainly, but Windows port coming)
Thunderbird (from the makers of Firefox: http://mozilla.com)
Mozilla Suite (Seamonkey)
Calendaring for TB is under development and not quite there, so it
depends on if you really need calendaring right now. You could also use
Gmail and Google Calendar to fit the bill.
