You have made an incorrect assumption. This being that you can change from embedded to link on the fly. Not so. So what you have to do is delete the original picture and insert the new one. Only this time when you insert select the Link checkbox. Now your graphic will depend only on the file name that you have given, remote or local, and change if you replace the picture.
