Thanks for your reply and the tips therein. Sorry about my omissions. I run Win XP Home and OO 2.0.9011 I do have the auto-save at 15 mins, but when the problem has occurred the file has been opened, a very small entry made, and then closing attempted as previously explained, so the auto-save hasn't had a chance. I have now carried out a check disk and repair on my drives, so hope for the best - though from what you explained it sounds promising! Thanks again. John B

This info and the version of OOo would help immensely in being able to offer some concrete assistance. However, I will take a stab. I think you should *VERY* carefully check your hardisk for bad spots. The problem you have described appears to me to be exactly this type of problem. In other words, you try writing out the file, hit a bad spot and OOo has problems. Later, you try again and it works. You might also try enabling Tools > Options > Load/Save > Always create backup copy and Save AutoRecovery information every and select a reasonable time frame for your way of working. I use 15 minutes. -- PLEASE KEEP MESSAGES ON THE LIST. OpenOffice.org Documentation Co-Lead http://documentation.openoffice.org/
