I use OpenOffice 2.0.2 on a Windows XP machine and have as keyboard the
"United States International" installed instead of the normal one. The
advantage is that a lot of special characters are readily available by
pressing "CTRL"+"ALT" (or "ALT GR") and one of the normal keys. The ß
for example is CTRL+ALT and s , you get § if you add SHIFT. For the
German Umlaute, they are on p (ö), y (ü), q (ä) and so on, after some
trials one gets used to that very quickly. Another way is to intall
another language and enable the quick switch option by pressing
ALT+Shift, that way I can switch between a German and an English
keyboard layout - very handy! For Single special characters that I use a
couple of times in a document I insert it,using the special character
dialog and then highlight it (Shift+arrow keys) and copy it by pressing
CTRL+c, inserting then is easy by using Ctrl+V...
I hope that helps,
happy typing,

to compose a passage in (say) German, I can assign various special
characters (A umlaut and the like) to F keys, which makes typing quick
and easy; I don't have to insert each special character one at a
time. Is there any way of doing a similar thing with Openoffice? And
can I produce a "dash" of decent length (not just a hyphen)?
