I'm using Ubuntu, and I never use their version of Open Office, ever since they skipped out the thesaurus in that one build. I take the OO RPMs and run them through alien, and no problem.

Okay, I can follow this.

There is a minor nuisance of training my files to pen with the "real" OO, but that doesn't seem a big deal to me.

Ya lost me here. "pen"? I take that as open, but how are you training them to use the "real" OO? Keeping it simple for a new Ubuntu user...

Simply double-clicking on an .odt file will open it in the Ubuntu version of OpenOffice. You have to click once, then "Open with" select the official OpenOffice, then mark it as "always open this type of files with this program."
