I would hypothesize that the vendor of the spreadsheet is putting the '
in front of numerical values to dissuade operations on the file's
values. You will have to use a '-removing macro trick to solve that.

provides me very quickly/efficiently with a MS Excel spreadsheet
which I can open with OpenOffice.
