[users] Numeric file cannot open in calc. Reverts to writer

I am using OOo 2.03 and Windows XP Pro with all the IT baggage here at
the univ.
 
I have a  numeric text file (numbers only, no text) with no extension. 
When I try to open it with calc it reverts to the word file and will not
open intothe calc file. I can copy the data from writer to calc
successfully.
