pay for Microsoft's product.
You may also try abiword which is another open source software for word
processing.

No, OOo won't open MS Works files. My understanding is that even MS
Office won't open Works files, but I may be mistaken about that. (The
opposite I'm pretty sure is true -- Works won't open MS Office files.)
