I just DLed and installed build 9044 (2.0.3). I looked in Add/Remove
and I have two entries for OpenOffice. Can I safely remove my old one
(build 8990)?

Yes, that is the only way to currently upgrade.
It will keep all your settings and will not touch your documents, and
should just overwrite the program files with the updates.
