There is a bug in writer what changes the size of LARGE image in a frame
( I think over 1650 pixels) to some negative number and hence the image
is not displayed. The data itself is not lost. This occurs only when the
document is saved in .doc format.

Are you low on memory?
Look at the settings in Tools > Options > OpenOffice.org > Memory.
I'm just guessing. I don't know relevant values.
