OO.o 2.02 on Ubuntu Dapper amd64

I exported a database as a DBF-5 file from MS Access 2000 in order to
convert it to OO.o Base format. I opened OO.o Base and told it to open
the file. It opens the table, but when I click on Tables I get an error
message popup:

OpenOffice.org requires a Java runtime environment (JRE) to perform
this task. The selected JRE is defective. Please select another version
or install a new JRE and select it under Tools - Options -
OpenOffice.org - Java."

When I open Tools - Options OpenOffice.org - Java the window pops right
up but is frozen for a very long time while it (I suppose) goes out and
looks for installed JREs. Finally it displays Java Runtime Environment
1.4.2 and "Use Java Runtime Environment" is checked. I click on OK, but
Base still gives me the same error messages.

Opening Synaptic and doing a search on "Java" I find that I have
installed:

j2re1.4
           Blackdown Java Runtime Environment
j2re1.4-mozilla-plugin
           Java plugin for Firefox
           (about:plugins says it is installed)
openoffice.org-java-common
           OpenOffice.org common files

There are several other java-related things installed, but none of them
appear to have anything to do with the problem.

What is wrong? What else do I need to install?

I note in Synaptic that I have the option to install sun-java5-bin and
sun-java-jre. They are currrently not installed. Would that solve the
problem? Which JRE does OO.o require?
