Hi Mary Jo,

(I copied you because I assume that you are not subscribed to the list (and because I noticed that Dan did and I assume that he knows stuff that I do not).

I just wanted to reiterate a few things.

First, the mailing lists is primarily populated with normal users.

How private is this?

Downloads are not tracked. In other words, you can download it and they do not know that you did. When you run OpenOffice.org (OOo) for the first time, it will ask if you are registered. If you say Yes, then that is the end of it. If you say No, and I want to register now, then a web browser will be opened, and you can register as a user. The primary purpose for this allows the people who care to be able to say things like "We have 1,332, 234 users". In other words, choosing to not register has no affect at all on how OOo works on your computer or what you can do.

When I down load this, will you then be able to
search through my computer?
No. OOo has no reason to search your computer and as such, does not.
Well, it might search for a copy of Java, but that is only because it uses Java if it is on your computer. If it finds Java, it is used, and if not, then it is not and you can not use the stuff that requires Java. If you do not know what Java is, do not worry about it for now.

Do I have to be on a mailing list?
No. If you want to post questions and recieve answers, you probably want to join the mailing list, however. No requirement. I used OOo for years before I finally joined a mailing list.

Do I have to pay you back
No.

Will I now be allowing pop-ups and spam?
No pop-ups and no spam. If you want email regarding OOo, then you need to join a mailing list, but that is not spam. It is possible that your email address could be revealed if you post to an email mailing list, however because anyone who joins or searches the list can see your email address.

what is my actual contract with you and do I have a choice of
how to 'pay' you or 'pay' you at all?

No contract and no reason to pay.
Sun, the primary backer of OOo provides a product based on the OOo source code called StarOffice. You can purchase StarOffice if you want. StarOffice is essentially OpenOffice.org with a few extras thrown in for free. The primary extra that you recieve for StarOffice is that you have technical support provided by Sun. This is very attractive, especially to business customers that require/desire service contracts so that they have guaranteed support. Although turn around time for support is very fast on the mailling lists, some companies require this or they will not use it.

By downloading your product, will I
have privacy for the work I do while using it?
You will still have privacy. OOo does not place any hooks into your data of any sort. Ironcially, when I needed to clean a Microsoft Word document, I typically did this by loading it into OOo and then writing it out again.

My recommendation is that you download OOo, install OOo, try it, and see if it meets your needs. If it does not, you can easily uninstall it and that will be the end of it.

Have a fabulous day.
