To be honest I don't know if it is possible to directly group objects from within Writer. The workaround I use is to create/paste and group the objects in Draw, then copy and paste into Writer. After that it is possible to ungroup and regroup from within writer, pretty much the same way as you would from within Word. Hope this helps.
