All you actually have to do is to select a cell, then click it while keeping Shift down. Now the cell is highlighted (has black background) and can be moved around.

The other methods mentioned will also work, it's just a matter of taste, I guess.

In order to move the contents of a single cell by clicking and dragging, you need to do the following:

1. Select the cell
2. Drag to select at least one other cell
3. Without releasing the mouse button, drag BACK so that only the original cell is selected

Now you can drag the contents of the cell.

I suggest you take a look at the OOoAuthors chapter, Differences in Use Between Calc and Excel. The above is documented there, along with quite a few other "non-obvious" differences.
