As mentioned below what "white box"? Which Icon are you talking about? Is it the icon that marks the application? or is it the icon the appears before going into the word processor? The bird in the icon that appear to mark the application are toward the bottom and the top bird is the middle. In any case I've been clicking all over the icon and no menu appears. When on the disk the OpenOffice.org icon is double clicked the is a menu with OpenOffice.org on the left had side and a "File" menu. The "File" menu only has "Use Start Screen" faintly and can't be used.

Yes. It's there. Just click the little icon in the top left corner that looks like a piece of paper with writing on it behind a bird. (think white box with lines and a funky v in front of it) that will drop down a list of all the other modes of OpenOffice.org.
