Of course you can uninstall any program before installing another. Simply use add/remove programs and away you go.

OOo can certainly read .doc files fine. If .doc files are double clicked from a mail program, and OOo is selected as the default program to open them, then the file will be opened correctly. Note, that there will always be some minor conversiojn issues between doc and OOo file formats. /paul
