Using curly braces ("{" and "}") round the text allows multiple words to be
overlined (as per other respondents).
Typing the word "overline" into the formula editing box saves right clicking
and selecting Attributes/Overline.

On Windows the following seems to work:
At the point where you want the overlined text do Insert/Object/Formula. A
box (the Formula Editing box) will appear below your document, which will
shrink to accommodate it.
Right click in this box and, from the menu that opens, choose Attributes
and then select "Overline abc"
The words "overline <?>" will appear in the box; the "<?>" will be
highlighted. Type your text on top of it and hit Return.
The box will close and the *overlined* text will appear in your document.
Unfortunately only a single word can be overlined in this way. Nothing
after the first space in what you type gets overlined.
I haven't fiddled about enough to determine if there is a shortcut for
this. OO is usually flexible enough to let you define your own shortcut
(or a macro perhaps???). Or maybe you can add a button to a toolbar
somewhere. Exercise for the class ;-)
It's a bit long winded and doesn't easily allow you to decide to overline
something already typed but ...
HTH.

Hi Pete,
Is there a way to overline text?
You can use Math (the equation editor) for this.
type 'bar {your text}' (without the quotes) and you get text, that is
overlined.
Hope, this helps you.
Thanks. Tell me where I went wrong:
1) open text file with writer
2) place cursor
3) in the lower window, type
bar test test test
4) hit Enter
I do not get test test test with a bar over it.
