I use winMD5sum.  54K and free.  Just drop your download on top of its desktop icon, works automagically.  Google for it.

Ignore the message; go ahead and install OpenOffice.
It seems that about Half of all programs, drivers, etc that are either downloaded from the web or that come on a disc, do NOT have a valid digital signature. Many of them tell you right in the instructions, that you should ignore the warning.
Windows XP itself is where the warning is probably coming from rather than your security software (although that is possible too.) While it is certainly *possible* that some of the ones without signatures may be bad programs (trojan virus, worm, whatever) if you keep your Anti-Virus program updated and running regular scans and Real-time file scanning enabled you should be just fine. Also be sure to keep any Anti-Spyware programs updated, as well as you having them scan your computer regularly -AND- be using a proper firewall that blocks traffic in and out.
In any event, OpenOffice.org is safe to install. If you're still nervous about OOo you can check it via its MD5 checksum to be sure it is the exactly as it should be. You'll have to find out more about the MD5 checksum from someone else. There are programs that can check them but I don't have any links to them at this point in time. I use NERO's Checksum checker, myself. You can get their MD5 checksum checker from downloads page(s) on the NERO website. I don't think you need to have their (overpriced and a bit quirky at times, but powerful) FULL version to be able to get the checker, but you might.

Many thanks,
