With "Paste Special" I can formats across documents just fine.

Use paste special or create a default template with your own
cell-styles, which gives you the very best feature of all. Named styles
are an outstanding feature of StarOffice/OpenOffice.org. I never used
that brush and my format-toolbar is hidden most of the time.
