     When you save a new file, make sure that Automatic file extension 
is checked. (It probably is not.)
     For the files you have already saved without an extension, open 
each one up and do a Save As with the Automatic file extension box 
checked.
     GRS has given you a link that will explain how to save your 
documents in both file formats at one time. It contains a TYPO. 
http://documentation.openoffice.org/HOW_TO/  is the correct URL. As he 
wrote, look for "Multi-save Addon in English". It is in the 
Miscellaneous section.
