You use different page styles for those pages that should not have page
numbers. Switching page styles may not be obvious even though you have
styles. I encourage you to read

so you get the page switches correct. If you need an example of a
document that does this, please see
http://documentation.openoffice.org/servlets/ProjectDocumentList and
choose one of the templates. This template is more or less what is used
to produce the user guide.
