We're probably so used to tables that we have forgotten how timeconsuming it 
used to be on a typewriter to outline a text into a tabular way. Sometimes 
people still use the top ruler to outline a text in columns and in those 
situations it could be handy to select in vertical blocks. Word can do that if 
you select and press the Alt-button.

A workaround could be to (temporarily) convert the text you want to select to a 
table. After that it is possible to select the column you need to copy or cut.
