I am trying to calculate a column of figures in a on touch (one button
function). I have worked with Excel for several years. I'm used to being able
to select a column of numbers and hitting the E(sum) button for adding,
averaging and other functions. My question is there the same function without
having to enter a long formula version?

Thanks for the help.

Steve

There is a Sum button (upper case Greek letter sigma) in Calc. To use it, do not select the column of numbers first. If you want the answer (the sum) to be in the cell just below, the column of numbers, click in that cell (just below the column), then click the Sum button. Calc will make an educated guess as to what cells you want to sum; it's correct more often than not. If it's correct, just press Enter and you're done. If it's not correct, then drag through the cells that you want included in the summation, then press Enter.

I'm not aware of Excel having similar buttons that do averaging or other functions, and I'm also not aware of Calc having anything like that. For anything other than summations, I believe that you would need to enter the formula. But they're usually not "long" by any means. If you're at all uncertain what the formula is called or the syntax of it, click the Function Wizard button ( f(x) ) which will help you find the right function and enter it correctly.
