To unzip the .ods file, do I need to rename it first to .zip?

Do you already have a predefined XML format or you just want XML in
general ?
If it is the later then you can unzip the .ODS file and use the
content.xml
file. if it is the later then you need to write some XSLT ( have a look on
http://xml.openoffice.org for more detail).
