Here is an answer to both questions. There is a chapter on Base
in the Getting Started Guide which is available at
http://documentation.openoffice.org/manuals/oooauthors2/. The User's
Guide is suppose to be updated soon to contain more current
information on Base. It is at
http://documentation.openoffice.org/manuals/.
Your first question is answered in the Base chapter of the
Getting started Guide ("Getting Started with Base").
