I've been looking through the forum because I was under the impression that a firm solution to this had been found.

I've been reminded that you can, if necessary, change the locale for the document so that the point is not recognised as a date separator.

You would probably not want the decimal separator to be the same as the locale setting because the point is commonly used as such in locales which use something else as a date separator.

In any case, the menu path is Tools >Options >Language Settings >Languages.

The other thing you could try is Paste-Special and de-select "Date and Time".

Did you try selecting the column format in the import window?

Evidently, the same effect can be achieved with a user-defined format. The built-in text format is @. A format using '@ (which would insert a leading apostrophe) has been used successfully.

It seems that the decision is already made in the text document. When I
format or pre-format the spreadsheet as text, I get the numeric
representatiof the date. In the end I saved as text and processed it with
perl and vi. Never-the-less, it would be nice to know how to keep oo.o from
assuming that something is a date.

This is from a post on the forum:
"Using a decent text-editor for csv-lists is a good idea (one program,
frequently mentioned here is "csved" for Windows).
When I open a list like this one:
"19.05.",19,"0,098093712748072","http://www.openoffice.org",,19
File>Open shows a dialog with preview. I can select the first column in
the preview and declare this column as text."

HTH. This is an example of software out-smarting itself.

I am copying a table from a text document to spreadsheet. One of the
fields in the table contains text in the format eg. 5.1.5. When pasting
into the spreadsheet, oo.org converts this text to dates. How do I stop
oo.org from doing this?
