Since you are using OpenOffice.org on a Mac, I will give the following
warning:

Stop OpenOffice.org by exiting the program.  This is done by pressing
the Cntrl+q keys (this is a bring-over from the Linux/UNIX versions.)
Then stop the X11 program.  Do not exit OpenOffice.org by exiting X11 by
itself as the locking file that prevents opening two separate occurances
of OpenOffice will be left behind and you will get the error message you
mention.
