Icons are not put on the desktop because it is felt that they aren't really
necessary (They really aren't.). I like icons on the desktop also, however it
only took me about 5 minutes to put all the different OpenOffice icons on the
desktop. (Unh 2 Hours?) I also seem to recall that versions of Microsoft
Office did not put on desktop icons either. Using Windows Explorer, I have no
problems at all putting on icons on the desktop with either OpenOffice or
Microsoft Office.

Most applications install an icon on
the desk at the same time so that the user can easily launch the program.
But not OpenOffice. Most applications have a file with an icon and/or an
understandable name that makes it easy to create an icon on the desk. But
not OpenOffice. After wasting two hours in vain, I uninstalled OpenOffice,
won't install it again this century, thought of the tens of thousands of
people who won't even have the chance to try OpenOffice, and finally
decided to buy a few Microsoft shares.
