That's true. Searching inside openoffice documents is very easy to
implement.
Most of the "desktop search" solutions that I know can search into
openoffice files.
The most popular are:

http://desktop.google.com/
You will need to download a plug-in for google desktop search, or the
expansion pack for yahoo.
