You can also add a macro to a toolbar and assign an icon to it, using Tools >Customise >Toolbar : Add : Modify - Change Icon.

sure there must be a better and quicker way (shortcut?) than using
menus to run a macro.

Hi Garth

To set a shortcut key for a macro:
Tools / Customize / Keyboard
In the top box set the shortcut key you want.
In the bottom boxes, select:
Category: OpenOffice.org Macros (and the correct subsection)
Function: your macro

Or, alternatively, to set a shortcut key for Insert Date:
Tools / Customize / Keyboard
In the top box set the shortcut key you want.
In the bottom boxes, select:
Category: Insert
Function: Date
