You must not only save the file with "xls" extension, but also save it
as a MS Excel file. At the "Save As" dialog window, clicks on "File
Type" box and select "Microsoft Excel 97/2000/XP".

Also, as you are editing MS Excel files, probably a message appears,
when you save them, suggesting to save the file using the OpenDocument
format and asking if you want to save the file using MS Excel format.
In this case, just answer "Yess". You may also want to select the
checkbox labeled "Don't show me this advice again".

And, finally, you can go at "Tools" menu, select the "Options" item,
select "Load/Save" at the left of the window, select "General" under
the option above and, at the right side, select "Spreadsheet" at
"Document type" and select "Microsoft Excel 97/2000/XP" at "Always
save as". So, all spreadsheets you save will be saved as MS Excel
files for default. It can be useful if you need to edit a lot of Excel
files and can't change the format. I, personally, would suggest you
use OpenDocument formats instead of Microsoft Office formats for a lot
of reasons, but I understand it is not always possible :)
