It unfortunate that you have had this experience, but I can assure you that you are the exception not the rule. The reason that there is no cost for OOo is that it is open source - do a google search on that if your still confused.
I myself (as have many on the list) installed OOo many times on many different OS's and I personally have not had one iota of problems. Sometimes the problems are with the OS and sometimes it is OOo. The thing with OOo is that you can lodge bugs that _will_ actually get looked at and corrected. If its the OS, then giving up, as you are, won't assist you or anyone else.
