it should work the same way that NaturallySpeaking works with open office which is through direct injection of keystrokes into the application. Correction will be very limited. Usually at best we can correct the last utterance.

Be aware that there is something about open office (and Thunderbird) that seem to reduce the accuracy of speech recognition. I don't know why but I get significantly worse results when dictating directly into open office versus something like DragonPad.

My suspicion is that open office takes way more resources than simple editors and this causes problems with how speech recognition programs read data from the audio stream.

It would be nice if nuance (owners of both NaturallySpeaking and ViaVoice the ever helpful monopoly on desktop speech recognition) would work with open office and make a high accuracy, friendly to use interface but I'm not holding my breath. I think Microsoft would be a better group to work with because they seem to be actively reaching out to the handicapped community for not just speech recognition but the entire OS and application base.

(Note to the open office community: No, this is not just a troll. It's what we are seeing for real. In the programming by voice mailing list, we have active participation by a person from Microsoft and zero participation from nuance or quite frankly almost anyone else in the open-source community except us cripples)

Dave, I recommend getting NaturallySpeaking instead of ViaVoice for a variety of reasons including there is one low level python-based extension toolkit and two higher level macro kits built on the python code base. is also a commercial product for macros called knowbrainer that works with NaturallySpeaking preferred and professional.

Thanks to the help from Microsoft, we are trying to convert the toolkit over to vista but that's going slow. If Nuance continues to be handicapped hostile, the conversion may go a little faster.
