Check the tools -> options ->languages and ensure that French is the top most language and that it is acutally selected. If the French language is not available, you will need to download and install a French dictionary through File -> Wizards -> Install Dictionary. This will install a the French dictionary used by OpenOffice.org 2.0.x.
